Patient Information for Bone Density
Screening
- A bone
density measurement will determine your bone mineral density (BMD) for
the area measured and compare that result with the average BMD of young
adult normal of your sex and race at their peak BMD. This information
will help your health care provider determine if you need to take
certain steps to protect your bone health. bone density measurement is
simple, safe, noninvasive and painless, and you don't need to undress.
- A
measurement takes from 5 to 20 minutes. You will be asked to lie still
during that time. Radiation exposure is minimal, much less than a
mammogram.
- Please
wear loose fitting clothes, no plastic, metal or wooden buttons, zippers
or closures around your waist if possible. Sweatshirts or t-shirts and
pull-on pants work well. avoid underwire bras if possible.
- Appointments cannot be scheduled within 6 weeks of a CT scan,
barium scan, IVP or bone scan.
- Please do
not take your calcium supplement on the day of your appointment. Bring
your calcium supplement bottle with you, or write down the type of
calcium and dosage you take. Also, please bring a list of any other
medications you are currently taking.
- The
procedure price is $150.00 plus a $30.00 interpretation fee. Payment is
requested at the time of your visit, with the exception of Blue
Cross/Blue Shield, Rocky Mountain HMO, Medicare, some Sloan's Lake, MMA
and Intercare Insurance policies. We do have contracts with those
companies, and will bill them directly. If you have any questions,
please contact your insurance company prior to your visit to determine
the need for pre-authorization or circumstances under which they will
cover your scan.
