Patient Information for Bone Density Screening

  • A bone density measurement will determine your bone mineral density (BMD) for the area measured and compare that result with the average BMD of young adult normal of your sex and race at their peak BMD. This information will help your health care provider determine if you need to take certain steps to protect your bone health. bone density measurement is simple, safe, noninvasive and painless, and you don't need to undress.
  • A measurement takes from 5 to 20 minutes. You will be asked to lie still during that time. Radiation exposure is minimal, much less than a mammogram.
  • Please wear loose fitting clothes, no plastic, metal or wooden buttons, zippers or closures around your waist if possible. Sweatshirts or t-shirts and pull-on pants work well. avoid underwire bras if possible.
  • Appointments cannot be scheduled within 6 weeks of a CT scan, barium scan, IVP or bone scan.
  • Please do not take your calcium supplement on the day of your appointment. Bring your calcium supplement bottle with you, or write down the type of calcium and dosage you take. Also, please bring a list of any other medications you are currently taking.
  • The procedure price is $150.00 plus a $30.00 interpretation fee. Payment is requested at the time of your visit, with the exception of Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Rocky Mountain HMO, Medicare, some Sloan's Lake, MMA and Intercare Insurance policies. We do have contracts with those companies, and will bill them directly. If you have any questions, please contact your insurance company prior to your visit to determine the need for pre-authorization or circumstances under which they will cover your scan.
